Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is an island country in southern Europe, located in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of an archipelago between Italy, Tunisia and Libya. It lies 80 km south of Sicily, Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia, and 333 km north of Libya. The two official languages are Maltese, (the only Semitic language in Europe and the European Union), and English. The nation’s capital is Valletta.
With a population of just over 500,000 over an area of 316 km2 (122 sq mi), Malta is the tenth-smallest country by area and fifth most densely populated sovereign country. Its capital is Valletta, the smallest national capital in the European Union by area and population. According to the United Nations, “the whole territory of Malta constitutes a single urban region”. So Malta is increasingly referred to as a city-state.

Malta has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, hotter in the inland areas. Rain occurs mainly in autumn and winter, with summer being generally dry.
Maltese cuisine is the result of a long relationship between the Islanders and the many civilisations who occupied the Maltese Islands over the centuries. This marriage of tastes has given Malta an eclectic mix of Mediterranean cooking. Although the restaurant scene is a mix of speciality restaurants, there are many eateries that offer or specialise in local fare, serving their own versions of specialities.
The unique places to visit include the Grand Harbour (also named the Port of Valletta); St John’s Co-Cathedral, Gozo island, which is the second-largest island in the archipelago and Blue Lagoon of Comino Island Malta.
